Navigation portal and mobile apps (NAVCEN) redesign

Chiron’s team collaborated with Tuva (Akima group child company) on a project that involved the analysis, feedback gathering, and redesign of the current website and mobile applications for the Navigation Center. The Navigation Center, which serves as the Coast Guard’s center of excellence for electronic positioning, navigation, and timing, encompasses a range of critical functions such as radio navigation, electronic charting, and vessel identification and tracking. The project duration spanned slightly over 6 months, during which Chiron worked closely with Tuva to enhance the user experience and functionality of the website and mobile apps.

  • The project addressed the challenges of an outdated look and feel, integration with third-party services, and a substantial database.

Chiron’s team collaborated with Tuva (Akima group child company) on a project lasting over 6 months, focused on analyzing, gathering feedback, and redesigning the outdated website and mobile applications of the Navigation Center, the Coast Guard’s center of excellence for electronic positioning, navigation, and timing.  Chiron’s team conducted a thorough analysis of the website structure, mobile app architecture, and database hierarchy, while leveraging user feedback and modern design trends to propose a refreshed UI/UX. The technical implementation involved code analysis with Visual Studio, Eclipse, and Xcode, and wireframes were developed using Adobe Cloud Products.

  • The US Coast Guard faced challenges with an outdated website and mobile applications for iOS and Android platforms.

These platforms lacked modern design and features, despite having integrations with third-party services and a large database. Additionally, the separate administration portal added complexity to site configuration and information management.

  • A UI/UX designer helped create a new and improved look for the website and mobile applications based on user feedback and modern design trends.

As part of the solution, Chiron’s team collaborated closely with the US Coast Guard’s Navigation Center (NavCen) IT department to analyze the website structure, database hierarchy, and mobile application architecture. Proposed solutions included redesigning the user interface, updating the features and functionality, and streamlining the administration portal for improved site management.

  • We collaborated closely with the NavCen IT department to understand the technical requirements and constraints

    • Analyzed the existing website structure, database hierarchy, and mobile application architecture
    • Utilized Adobe Cloud Products for wireframe development and UI/UX design
    • Conducted code analysis using Visual Studio, Eclipse, and Xcode
    • Examined the on-premises SQL server database for optimization opportunities
    • Proposed solutions for website redesign, mobile application updates, and streamlined administration portal functionality
